Abstract

This paper describes the design and fabrication procedure of leaf spring using composite material. The automobile industry is constantly focusing on reduction of the weight of un-sprung mass of an automobile without compensating on its performance. The aim of this project is to achieve such a weight reduction in the un-sprung mass of the vehicle i.e. leaf spring without compensating on is load bearing capacity. The project deals with comparing of load bearing capacity, stiffness and weight reduction of composite leaf spring with that of steel leaf spring. The static analysis of the 2-D model of the composite leaf is performed using ANSYS. The FEA results using ANSYS software is compared with the experimental result. Compared to steel leaf spring the composite leaf spring has a stresses and deflection that is much lower and significant weight reduction is achieved.
