Abstract

This study investigates the effects of the backfill and foundation soil on analysis of bridge abutment. Most of the civil engineering structures involve some type of structural element with direct contact with ground. When the external forces, such as earthquakes, act on these systems, neither the structural displacements nor the ground displacements, are independent of each other A design driven methodology to model the abutment stiffness for either linear or non-linear analysis on FEM package STAAD considering the backfill soil stiffness and foundation soil stiffness is presented. An iterative design procedure of successive linear pseudo-static analyses that takes into account to observe Effects on behavior of bridge abutment. Free-standing seat type cantilever bridge abutment supported on spread footing is selected to demonstrate the proposed procedures. Parametric studies demonstrate that, if the bridge abutment is analyzed with the proposed methodology instead of a simple procedure that ignores backfill stiffness reduction, the calculated forces and moments at the abutment are greater by 35%-50% and the displacements by 15%-50%, depending on soil properties.
