Influence of Silica Fume on Flexural Strength of Concrete

Abstract

Portland cement is the chief, versatile constituent of concrete and relatively a high cost material. Large scale production of cement leads to serious environmental impacts on one hand and depletion of natural resources on other hand. This potent threat to ecology has led researchers to use industrial by products as supplementary cementious material in making concrete. The main parameter investigated in this paper is M35 grade concrete with partial replacement of cement by silica fume by 0, 5, 10,15 and 20%. This paper presents an experimental study on flexural strength at age of 7 and28 day. Test results indicate that use of Silica fume in concrete has improved the performance of concrete in flexure and the optimum silica content being 15%.
