Braking Performance Improvement of Vehicle by Implementing Exhaust Braking System

Automobiles these days are getting more and more improved. Light vehicles like cars have evolved to great extent while leaving their counterparts like heavy vehicles. This project is to build a braking performance enhancing system for heavy vehicles as breaking in heavy vehicles itself is a crucial thing being these vehicles, heavy weight. To share the excessive load on the service brakes and for safety of the engine valve trains in downhill gradients heavy duty vehicle are installed with exhaust brake. The automatic actuation of exhaust brakes will ensure effective utilization of the available engine braking power and safety. This modification is specifically effective for heavy vehicles in which inertia is huge on account of heavy weight. The exhaust braking system mainly consist of butterfly valve fitted on the exhaust pipe which regulates the flow of exhaust gases inside the exhaust pipe. Thus, the entire concept of exhaust braking system is based on the generation of back pressure due to the butterfly valve. Performance analysis of this exhaust braking system is done in this project. The engine used for taking readings in this project is single cylinder four stroke diesel engine. The readings of various parameters such as manometer height, RPM and back pressure are taken at the various angles of butterfly valve by considering different loading conditions. Based on these readings, some calculations are also done for calculating various efficiencies of the engine. The graphical representation of the results obtained from the performance analysis of exhaust braking system is also done. From the results of analysis it can be seen that the exhaust braking system provides better braking of vehicles in emergency conditions. Thus by implementing this modification the entire vehicle performance improves.
