Abstract |
Seismic response of structures is extremely complex because of the unpredicted behavior of soils during earthquakes. Structures founded on rock are considered to be fixed-base structures. On the other hand, the same structure will respond differently if supported on a soft soil deposit. The response of the soil influences the motion of the structure and response of the structure influences the motion of the soil. This is referred to as Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI). SSI effects account for the flexibility of the foundation support beneath the structure and potential variations between foundation and free-field motions. Earlier studies have indicated that, interaction effect is quite significant, particularly for the structure resting on compressible soil. |
