Investigation on Effect of Filler on Aging Behaviour of Paving Grade Bitumen
-Ankit G. Gondaliya ; Ashraf Mathakiya
Currently, majority of the Indian roads are flexible pavements the ones having bituminous layers. The durability and the long term satisfactory performance of pavements are always influenced and affected to a greater extent by the employed pavement ingredient materials and their inherent properties. It properties changes as it ages bulk storage, transport and storage on site. When the bitumen is age hardened, the asphalt mixture will become brittle and its ability to support traffic-induced stresses and strains may significantly reduce. The main mechanisms of aging of bitumen are oxidation and loss of volatiles. In this present study hydrate lime and concrete dust is used in various percentages (1%, 2%, 3% and 4%) as modifiers in VG-30 bitumen. The effect on physical properties in terms of penetration, softening point and viscosity before and after aging are measured. The binders are aged using Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT). Before aging penetration is decreases and viscosity and softening point value is increases with increasing percentage of filler material. After aging penetration of aged binders decreases then unaged binder. Softening point increases of aged binders than unaged binders. Increase in softening value is less for binder having 4% hydrate lime and concrete dust as filler than other binders after aging. For binder having 0% hydrate lime and 3% concrete dust has less increase in viscosity value than other binders. Read More...

Significance of Logistic Regression Modeling in Open Cast Mine Injury Investigations
-M. K. Singh ; Prof. (Dr.) U. K. Dey
The paper significance of logistic regression modeling in opencast mine injury investigation addresses the problem of open cast mines and related modeling through the application of multivariate analysis. The epidemiological methods developed in this work will assist the safety management to identify significant risk factors and the risk groups which can provide a basis to develop prevention strategies including training. The findings of the multivariate statistical analyses indicate that both the personal and impersonal factors affect the occurrence of an injury. In this study although 8 risk factors were suspected, The findings are of two types: variables that show distinct relationship with the degree of injury and those, whose significance lies in the fact that they do not show any relationship with the degree of injury. Of the former, are personal factors, environmental condition, machinery condition, job satisfaction and risk taking behavior that are significance. The adjusted odds ratios are 12.17, 5.26, 6.35, 5.04 and 9.85 respectively for significant risk factors in relation to injury vs no injury case. Similarly, 9.54, 8.40, 4.86 and 9.28 respectively for reportable vs no injury case. On the basis of ordinal logistic regression results, we see that for one unit increase in personal factors, environmental condition, job satisfaction and risk taking behaviors, there are respectively 1.554, 1.243, 1.440 and 1.613 units increase in log odds of injury. accident–prevention programs must identify reasons for unsafe conditions and/or behaviors and need to redesign the work environment and/or unsafe behaviors. Mine management and employee’s commitment are vital in achieving good health and safety performance. Dumper systems and tires must be properly maintained. Dumper cabs must be kept free of loose items, such as cleaning rags, or empty oil cans that create distractions and footing hazards. Decks must be kept clean of slippery oils, tools, and spilled muck. Dumper accessories, such as radios, mirrors and safety strobes, must be kept in proper working order. Dumper drivers should use seat belts during driving. Read More...

Rapid industrialization and increase in population are the main factor for environmental pollution. Pulp and paper mill are the major source of pollution generating industries. The wastewater generated by these industries contains high COD, BOD, color, organic substances and toxic chemicals. Normally we treat the pulp and paper mill effluent by activated sludge, lagooning, chemical precipitation and anaerobic treatment. In this study the effluent was treated by microorganism. We identify the predominant bacteria present in pulp and paper mill effluent and to evaluate the degradation efficiency of individual bacterial species and their combination. Two bacterial were isolated from the pulp and paper mill effluent. Bacillus Subtilis and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and their combination to reduce the maximum level of COD and BOD within retention time of 24 h in batch culture. Bacillus Subtilis show 60% BOD5 reduction and 89% COD reduction than Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and their combination where the sample was collected from the inlet of UASB. Read More...

Experimental Performance of Coil Finned Tube Type Heat Exchanger
-Patel Smit S. ; Dr. S. M. Mehta
It is known that the gas liquefaction system is very crucial part of cryogenics engineering because it is used to produce different cryogens. Heat Exchanger is the most crucial component in cryogenic processes, for improving efficiency and decreasing cost of the whole plant. Coiled finned-tube heat exchangers have been used in small and medium helium refrigerators/liquefiers, miniature J–T refrigeration systems for many years. The efficiency of these cryogenic systems strongly depends on the thermal and pressure drop performance of these heat exchangers. A considerable improvement in the performance of heat exchanger is possible by choosing an appropriate geometrical configuration for a given process requirement. In this work fabrication and experimentation has been carried out. Geometry of heat exchanger has been derived taking into consideration the clearance provided for manufacturing of the heat exchangers. The predictions of four end temperatures from design method have been compared with the actual experimental results of one of the prototypes fabricated in our lab. Read More...

Wireless Patient Monitoring System using Zigbee
-Samiksha Umakant Mowade ; Mr. A. B. Lambat
As we have renowned hospitals all over the world, but still there is a need of better health care monitoring system. The ratio of staff in the hospitals is less than the total number of patients; also a paramedical assistant need to continuously monitor and note down all the vital parameters of a given patient by keeping track of all of his/her records manually. Adopting such a method is error prone and may lead to disaster in the case of a human error. In the current proposed system a better solution to raise the standard of existing continuous patient health monitoring system is given. Continuous patient monitoring needs frequent measurement of the associated health parameters status. The wireless Technology used here is Zigbee. A ZigBee node is connected to every patient monitor system that consumes very low power and is extremely small in size. These are specifically designed for low power consumption, with minimal circuit components intended for small packet, long distance range applications .Sensors are used to monitor the patient continuously over long period of time until the abnormal condition is detected. Once detected, the collected data is sent securely via Zigbee to the physician taking care of that particular patient for further analysis. If a mismatch occurs, a buzzer alarm is issued and the results will be displayed on LCD and Laptop display. Hence, the main goal is to alert hospital staff in case of emergency during abnormal conditions. Read More...

Stress Intensity Factor and Strain Energy Release Rate in Carbon Epoxy Composite Specimen using ANSYS
-P. Aravinda Keerthi ; Dr P. Ravinder Reddy; B. Mohan
In aeronautical industry carbon fiber reinforced polymeric composites are used to manufacture several components such as flaps, aileron, landing gears, doors, nose cone and others. The mechanical property of the composite becomes complex with the addition of fibers. When subjected to compression, tension and flexure tests polymeric composites are susceptible to mechanical damages that can lead to interlayer delamination. Catastrophic failure of the component can occur due to the increase in the external load. Transverse stitching or pinning the fabric across the laminate to hold the plies together to increase inter-laminar shear strength under physical approach. The experiments were conducted for carbon epoxy composite. Mechanical properties such as thickness and elastic ratios are varied to examine the stress intensity factor and strain energy release rate in carbon epoxy composite by using ANSYS FEA software. The objective of the present work is to prepare the three point bend test specimen to estimate the distribution, stress intensity factor and strain energy release rate in carbon epoxy composite using finite element technique. Finite element model is generated in ANSYS and numerical analysis is conducted as per ASTM standards. Read More...
