Experimental Study on Compressive Strength of Concrete by Partial Replacement of Waste Foundry Sand
-K. N. Janardhanan
Metal foundries use large amount of sand as a part of metal casting process. Foundries recycle and reuse the sand. The sand which can no longer be reused, it is removed from the foundry and it is termed as foundry sand. Annually around 6-10 million tons of foundry sand is produced. Foundry sand has many beneficial applications in other industries. It mainly consists of silica sand, coated with a thin film of burnt carbon, residual binders etc. It can be used in concrete to improve its strength and other durability factors. It is used as a partial replacement of cement or fine aggregates and total replacement of fine aggregate and as supplementary addition to achieve different properties of concrete. This paper presents the experimental investigation on the effect of foundry sand as fine aggregate replacement on the compressive strength, porosity, sulfate attack and XRD of cement mortar having mix proportions of 1:3. Fine aggregates were replaced with three percentages of foundry sand and the replacements were 5, 10, and 15% by the weight of fine aggregate. Tests were performed for all the replacement levels of foundry sand at different curing periods (7 days, 14 days & 28 days). Read More...

The Study on Superconductivity and It's Applications
-Om Sabnis ; Katerina Barketova
Superconductivity is the property of material to conduct electricity by transporting the electrons from atom to atom with zero resistance. Which means that once material cool till its critical temperature and reach superconductive state, no heat, sound or any other form of energy will be released from superconductor interior. Unfortunately, almost all materials require a very low energy state (very cold temperature) in order to become superconductors. Currently, a lot of researches are being carried and superconductivity of the conductors is one of the most promising applied to the external world area of interest. Superconductors are used in various ways due to their properties - from completely zero resistance to quantum levitation. For now cooling superconductors require high amount of energy, which make them difficult to use for further applications due to inefficiency and high cost. This research paper will show influence of pressure effect on critical temperature of superconductor material. Most of material tended to reduce their critical temperature, however there are some exceptions. Let us take a proper look on this problem and compare critical temperature behavior in different materials. Read More...

-A Pradeep Kumar ; A Karuppaiya
In this research work, investigations have been carried out to find the effect of waste foundry sand in high strength self-consolidated Concrete Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) stub columns. A total of 14 stub columns were tested under monotonic compression load to identify the optimum percentage of waste foundry sand which is an industrial waste. Among 14 specimens, eight specimens with circular cross-section of diameter 100mm and length 300mm and another eight specimens with square cross-sections of sides 100mm and length 300mm.Each seven specimens can be classified into three categories: two hollow steel tubular sections, two plain SCC columns, and ten SCC filled steel tubular sections. The experimental investigations indicate that the utilization of waste foundry sand has a impact on the strength and ductility of the steel tubular sections. Also the steel tubular sections act as external reinforcement which reduces the local buckling and increases lateral stability. When compared with the square columns, the circular columns save 30% of steel. SCC mixes are prepared by varying the cement content with replacement of foundry waste sand. In this work CFST were prepared with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of foundry waste sand replaced with the actual cement content .From the investigation it is noted that the ultimate load of steel tubular stub columns with foundry waste sand is higher when compared to conventional concrete and saves 10% of construction cost. The work proposes the solution for effective industrial waste management which reduces the environmental hazard and make an eco-friendly environment. Read More...

An Implementation of Switched Capacitor Inverter
-S. Raga Brintha ; K. Ramadas
A DC-AC inverter containing no inductors or transformers is presented. In the common inverter always contains the magnetic elements and so it results in the electromagnetic interference problem. For avoiding the EMI effect, it is a quite excellent choice to adopt a switched capacitor (SC) circuit scheme, containing only capacitors and switches. There are two methods of voltage conversions are possible. One of conventional method as a two stage inverter, this method has a several disadvantages. The most notable ones are (i) Cost (ii) Component stress. To solve this problem a single stage inverter is used. In this project work the switched capacitor inverter arrangement is fabricated, wired up, interfaced with a dc source and was tested. There are two main components of this arrangement. These components include a switched capacitor inverter and Arduino controller. The switched capacitor inverter is used to boost the input voltage and generates a regulated ac output. The Arduino controller is controlled the switched capacitor block switches and H-bridge inverter switches. It is used to regulate the ac output by varying the duty cycle. The advantages of the SC inverter are: no use of bulky inductors and a cost effective low profile design. A single stage switched capacitor inverter is simulated in PLECS (Piecewise Linear Electrical Circuit Simulation) environment and the practical implementation of this single stage inverter is done to validate the theoretical results. Closed loop control of single stage switched capacitor inverter is tested and the experimental results were observed. Read More...

-Mr. P Shashank ; Achuth Kumar C; Prajwal N; Divya Jangali; Amith S
Concrete has been used in the various forms of structures all over the world from last two decades. The development of concrete has carried around the major essential need for essences of chemical as well as mineral for the improvement in the act of concrete. The usage of different types of fibers and their orientation in matrix have shown the positive response among the researchers. In this study the performance of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) beams under two-point loading system is discussed and comparative studies were made with normal mix concrete. The mineral admixtures used in this study are steel fibers and glass fibers. In this study, we are casting the cubes for 3, 7, 28 days and beams only for 28days. The percentage addition by volume of concrete for mineral admixtures used is 0.5% and 1%. We are going to compare the results of compressive as well as flexural strength to normal concrete through different (0.5 and 1) percentages. The experimental study on normal strength concrete grade for 0.5% and 1% were also prepared respectively. Rebound hammer tests were conducted to assess the quality of concrete. Test results presented that the adding of suitable fraction volume of steel and glass fiber can improve the mechanical properties of the self-compacting concrete (SCC) and at the same time the flowing and passing abilities still within the accepted limits. In addition, incorporation of glass fibers had increased the ductility of self-compacting concrete. NDT tests discovered inclusion of fibers improves the surface hardness, homogeneity and quality of concrete. Read More...

Enhancing Level of Self Efficacy amongst Young Girls and Boys to Improve their Health Status
-Dr. Komal
Background: About twenty percent of India's population, almost 232 million is in the adolescent age group. This age group is a huge resource for any country and society and is considered backbone for future development. However, these young people, especially girls, face complex challenges reflected in terms of poor education, health, employment status. The poor developmental indicators has created an imbalance in the society while assigning lower value in terms of poor nutrition, poor access to services and child marriage which is a critical human rights violation and it can be a 'sentence' to regular exposure to domestic or sexual violence, and a pathway to commercial exploitation. Over the years, though young population is in the school but quality of education and its impact on human development index is quite low especially amongst poor population.
Aim of the study: To enhance level of self-efficacy amongst young girls and boys to improve their health status.
Methods: A quasi-experimental mixed method i.e. Qualitative and Quantitative study was conducted in Government schools of Noida in Feb 2018- May 2018. The study was started with Baseline survey and after 2 months of experiment, i.e. various health awareness sessions and activities Endline survey was conducted. Data of both the surveys were analyzed and compared. To assess the change, this study bought among young girls and boys qualitative data were also collected i.e. Participatory Rural Appraisal, Focus Group Discussion and Case Studies.
Results:
Majority i.e., 51.65% of the students were more than 14years old whereas 48.35% students were of less than 13 years of age. 30% of students were males and 70% of students were females. Students who wanted to continue their education has improved from 96.9% in Baseline survey to 98.8% in Endline survey. While calculating self-efficacy index, huge difference was observed in thinking of children i.e. in Baseline survey 71.4% students admitted that it is easy for them to stick to their aims and accomplish their goals while in Endline survey this has been observed in 94.5% of students whereas 79.6% students were able to find solutions of the problems they face in Baseline survey which has been improved to 90.1% in Endline survey. On assessing gender attitudes, a huge difference was seen in attitude of students when asked that do girls should allow to decide about their own marriage, in baseline survey, 60% of students agreed to this statement but after the sessions in Endline survey, 74.7 % students agreed to this. In Baseline survey, only 1% of students were aware about their blood group, 0% about their anemia status, 1.1% about hemoglobin status and 83.7% aware about the places where they can go to avail health facilities whereas in Endline survey 5% of students were aware about their blood group, 2.1 % about their anemia status, 4.1% about hemoglobin status and 86.5% about the places they can visit to health facilities.
Conclusion:
The outcome of the study reflects enormous changes in student's attitude towards achieving their vision, their health status, towards gender discrimination, violence, communication and negotiation. Despite of this, students are still not able to deal with many problems due to certain barrier. More time and patience is needed to bring a positive change in each and every student. Read More...

Performance Evaluation with Capacitive Energy Storage in a Hybrid Wind-Diesel Power System
-Prashant ; Jagjeet Sharma
In this paper, the aggravated increase in energy demand has posed a serious problem for the power system's stability and reliability, and hence has become of major concern. The shortcomings of conventional source of energy have paved way for renewable energy sources. The latter can form a part of a stand-alone system or grid connected system. A single renewable source of energy when integrated with other sources of energy it is termed as hybrid system. This paper deals with the hybrid wind-diesel engine system. Wind diesel hybrid systems (WDHS) obtain maximum contribution from wind and rest by diesel generators. They are handy for rural or island areas. In this work, dynamic performance enhancement of isolated hybrid wind diesel power system with a Capacitive Energy Storage unit (CES) are studied under different conditions. Wind diesel hybrid systems (WDHS) obtain maximum contribution from wind and rest by diesel generators. They are handy for rural or island areas. The variable power consumption as well as intermittent load variation may cause large fluctuations on system frequency. To reduce the system oscillations Capacitive Energy Storage (CES), which will supply and absorb active, reactive powers quickly, can be applied. The performance and the analysis is done in a user friendly MATLAB/Simulink environment by applying a step load and constant load disturbance of 1% in the system. The dynamic responses without and with CES unit are compared. Simulation studies reveal that inclusion of CES unit in the hybrid wind diesel power system improve transient performance of both wind and diesel sides. Read More...

A Review on CFD Analysis of Turbulent Heat Transfer in Solar Air Heater by using Roughness Geometry
-Munna Kumar ; Amit Kumar Yadav; Manjit Kumar
In mechanical industries or thermal power sector the most commonly using element is "AIR PRE HEATER", which is a form of Heat Exchanger and by this equipment we can increase the temperature of the air which has been to use in required purpose. By using the solar air heater we can increase the efficiency of organization. And the use of artificial roughness in the form of repeated ribs on a surface is an effective technique to enhance the rate of heat transfer. A numerical investigation on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of fully developed turbulent flow in a rectangular duct having repeated transverse X shaped rib roughness on the absorber plate has been carried out. The commercial finite-volume CFD code ANSYS FLUENT is used to simulate turbulent airflow through artificially roughened solar air heater. The flow Reynolds number of the duct varied in the range of 3800 to 18,000, most suitable for solar air heater. Solar air heater is operating on the principle of forced convective heat transfer between the wall and a working fluid (air). But the efficiency of the air heater is naturally of low value due to the fact that air has inferior thermodynamics properties in terms of heat transfer but it can be increase by the changing the shape of duct inner area in terms of roughness of artificial roughness. The method used to increase the heat transfer coefficient between the working fluid (air) and absorber surface is to create the turbulence inside the solar air heater duct. The turbulence is used to break the viscous sub layer at the absorber surface and change into the turbulent air flow from the laminar. Yadav and Bhagoria have simulated the above geometries using ANSYS FLUENT code and RNG kε turbulence model. The results were presented in terms of Nusselt number versus Re, friction factor versus Re, Nusselt number ratio versus Re, friction factor ratio versus Re, and thermal enhancement factor versus Re. From the literature review cited above, it is revealed that both experimental and numerical analysis works are done using the Roughness geometries fitted on the flow side of absorber plate. Promvonge et al. have adopted a new concept to increase the heat transfer in solar air heater duct. Promvonge et al. used ribs as artificial roughness on the absorber plate and in addition to this delta winglet, as a swirl flow generator in inlet section to create the additional turbulence from inlet section. This concept results in increase of heat transfer rate. Read More...

An Experimental Study on Vertically Loaded Driven and Bored Piles
-Chethan Bagoor ; Madhukar Biradar; Kiran Pattanashetti; Keerthi Kattimani; P. G. Rakaraddi
Deep foundation is a kind of foundation used when the soil near to the top surface is incapable of resisting the super structure load. Pile foundation is one type of deep foundation, where the piles are used to transfer the load coming from the super structure to the deeper depth safely. Piles are subjected to different types of loading viz… vertical load, horizontal load etc., and the capacity of the piles to carry load also depends on various factors like diameter of pile, depth or length of pile, material of the pile used etc. Present work consists of group of piles of four numbers placed in circular, square, triangular shape. The piles used in study are of same cross sectional area, spaced at 2.5d (diameter of pile), 3d, and 3.5d centre to centre. The group of piles embedded in soil of different density (dense, loose, loose over dense and dense over loose) are tested for vertical loading. Read More...

-Assistant Professor Mit N Patel
This paper represents the performance of single cylinder HCCI Engine using Biodiesel Mixture. The Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is a new trend alternative technology to current engine combustion systems. Many inventions in PHCCI is being worked out to use it as a method to reduce exhaust emissions and also fuel economy. The quality of homogeneous mixture of air and fuel is the key feature of HCCI combustion. HCCI has the characteristic nearly eliminate NOx emissions while increasing efficiency as in diesel engine. HCCI adapts a pre mixture of gas-phase fuel and air being burned spontaneously and entirely by an auto ignition process. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines promises a high thermal efficiency combined with low levels of NOx and PM emissions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of alternative fuel when used in the HCCI engine combustion process. The experiments were conducted in a modified single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine. In this experiment we use diesel and bio-diesel Mixture as the fuel at different milli second injection.
