The COVID-19 pandemic induced lockdown had adverse effect on the general population but certain groups like the elderly were more affected than others. The study conducted on selected elderly of a selected area in Kolkata, reflects the psycho-social problems faced by the elderly, the resulting change in life style, the coping mechanisms adopted by them and the different groups that extended their support to the elderly. The study revealed that the elderly has suffered from multiple problems including physical and mental health problems and challenges related to adoption of new technology. Traditional social institutions - family, friends, paid domestic workers and colleagues have emerged as most dependable support system for the elderly. |
