Herpes zoster, caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, is known for its painful rash and potential complications, especially in older adults and those with weakened immune systems. This study compares the effectiveness, safety, and cost considerations of Allopathic (western medicine) and Local Ayurvedic treatments for herpes zoster, highlighting the intersection of modern and traditional medical approaches. Allopathic treatments focus on antiviral medications like acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir, aimed at reducing infection severity, alleviating pain, and preventing complications. These approaches are rooted in clinical research, offering standardized diagnosis and treatment protocols. In contrast, Ayurvedic treatments take a holistic approach, balancing body energies, detoxifying, and boosting immunity through herbs, topical applications, dietary adjustments, and lifestyle changes. Data from 60 patients (30 per treatment group) were analysed, showing that perceptions of treatment safety favoured Allopathic methods, often perceived as safer despite higher costs. Herpes zoster was found most active in winter and summer, with reduced incidence during the rainy season. Statistical analyses revealed no significant difference between Allopathic and Ayurvedic treatments in managing pain intensity, tingling/burning sensations, or rash severity. However, Ayurvedic treatments were associated with fewer flu-like symptoms and quicker recovery times compared to Allopathic treatments, suggesting potential benefits in symptom management and recovery. Geographical location significantly influenced treatment choices, underscoring regional factors in healthcare decision-making. Future research could explore additional traditional medicine systems and conduct cost-effectiveness analyses to inform healthcare strategies. Integrating diverse medical approaches could enhance personalized treatment options for herpes zoster, accommodating global health needs while respecting cultural preferences and traditions. |
