This paper is aimed at studying the design & operation of Scalp Cooling System which is used to minimize the problem of Alopecia in cancer patients caused due to Chemotherapy procedure. Alopecia is the condition which occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss. Cancer cells are fast growing cells. When cancer patients are subjected to Chemotherapy, the use of cytotoxins causes death of all fast growing cells in the body, which includes hair follicle cells too. In order to minimize the death of hair follicle, cooling of the scalp is done, leading to hypothermia, which will eventually lead to slowing up of blood circulation in the scalp region. This will cause lower mobility of chemo drugs in that region, thereby leading to minimization in the death of hair follicle cells. |
