Abstract

The “Audio Speech-to-Sign Language Converter” is an innovative research project developed with the objective of enhancing communication accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This system aims to bridge the communication gap by converting spoken language into corresponding sign language gestures in real time. The project utilizes advanced technologies such as speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning to detect and interpret spoken words, which are then translated into animated or visual representations of Indian Sign Language (ISL). The system is designed to recognize continuous speech using an audio input device, process the speech through a trained recognition model, and map the resulting text to a predefined database of sign language gestures. These gestures are then displayed visually, either in the form of pre-recorded video clips or dynamic animations, allowing deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals to understand the spoken content effectively. The project focuses on Indian Sign Language to cater to the regional linguistic needs of the Indian population, while the system architecture can be extended to support other sign languages as well. This tool has significant applications in educational institutions, healthcare facilities, public services, and day-to-day communication, where inclusivity and accessibility are crucial. By leveraging artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, the system represents a step forward toward creating a more inclusive society, empowering individuals with hearing impairments to participate more actively in conversations and social interactions. The project not only highlights the practical applications of AI in accessibility but also opens doors for future enhancements such as reverse translation (sign language to speech) and multi-language support.
