Partitioning the still-emerging field of artificial intelligence was not part of the early promise of machine intelligence's influence. The idea of embedded intelligence was conceived by the pioneers of artificial intelligence as being combined with perception, cognition, and action. However, robotics and artificial intelligence have drifted apart over time. AI practitioners concentrated on issues and methods that were abstracted from reality. Roboticists focused on sensori-motor functions and typically had backgrounds in mechanical and electrical engineering. The increased interest in autonomous systems and the maturity of both domains are gradually bridging that gap. This special issue highlights the important aspects along the emerging field of integrated AI and robotics by bringing together the state of the art and experience in this area. |
