Abstract

This paper examines the potential of integrated rainwater harvesting systems (IRHS) as a sustainable solution to mitigate water scarcity challenges. With global freshwater resources under increasing pressure from population growth, urbanization, agricultural demands, and climate change, alternative water management strategies are essential. This research synthesizes findings from multiple case studies and technical implementations across diverse geographical and socioeconomic contexts. The results demonstrate that properly designed IRHS can supplement conventional water supply systems, reduce stormwater runoff, decrease energy consumption associated with water treatment and distribution, and promote community resilience. The paper proposes a comprehensive framework for integrating rainwater harvesting into urban and rural water management plans, highlighting cost-benefit analyses, technical considerations, policy approaches, and implementation challenges. The findings suggest that IRHS represent a viable component of sustainable water management strategies when implemented with appropriate consideration of local conditions and integrated within broader water governance frameworks.
