This paper presents an experimental study of roughness characteristics of surface roughness generated in CNC turning of AISI304 alloy steel and optimization of machining parameters based on response surface methodology. Metal cutting process is one of the complex processes which have numerous factors contributing towards the quality of the finished product. Machining is one of the most important and widely used manufacturing processes. The experimentation is carried out considering three machining parameters, viz., spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut as independent variables and the surface roughness parameter as response variable. It is seen that the surface roughness parameter decreases with increase in spindle speed and depth of cut but increases with increase in feed rate. The adequacy of the models of surface roughness has been established with the analysis of variance (ANOVA). |
