Abstract

The objective of this work is to formulate the optimal power flow problem for isolated micro-grids and solve it using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The implementation is done on a 34-bus radial distribution system where the power flow solution is obtained using the solution of quadratic equation in the Backward-Forward Sweep technique. This power flow algorithm includes the model of load, power generated from the renewables such as wind and solar photovoltaic systems to calculate the amount of power required from the diesel generators for optimal operation. A realistic data profile is provided to these models considering for a period of over 24-hour duration for loads, solar photovoltaic systems and wind profile. The solution of this optimization problem is obtained by varying different system parameters of the PSO such as number of particles, inertia and acceleration factor.
