Abstract

In last few years due to advancement in technology the need for lightweight, high performance, good quality materials has shifted in research from monolithic to composite materials because the conventional material was failed to achieve desired combinations of properties. To overcome this aluminum matrix composite(Al-MMC) is a favorable choice for researcher which can fulfill the need of today’s material due to their excellent properties like low density, high strength to weight ratio, low processing cost, good wear & corrosion resistance and good thermal stability. Al-MMC mostly used in marine, aircraft and automobile sectors. Reinforcements like alumina (Al2O3), silicon carbide (SiC), graphite, bagasse ash and fly ash can easily be added into the molten matrix using stir casting method. This paper presents a review on the development of stir cast Al-MMC and analyzes the effect of particle size variation on the mechanical behavior of Al-MMC.
