Abstract

This paper presents solutions for complex power system optimization problems using a recent swarm intelligence motivated algorithm namely, Backtracking Search Algorithm (BSA) algorithm. The BSA is applied to solve the complex power system problems. Here, BSA applied to solve capacitor placement and sizing problem. The problem is considered to reduce losses in transmission and distribution part of the power. The comparison of results with other significant methods for above problems shows that BSA may play the vital role in solving power system optimization problems.
