Abstract

Nature is a unique source of structures of high phytochemical diversity, many of them possessing important biological activities and medicinal properties. Stevia rebaudiana plant has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb and sweetener. The ethanol extract of Stevia rebaudiana leaves was qualitatively analyzed by thin layer chromatography and separated on silica gel column. The column was eluted with different solvents in their increasing order of polarity. Purification of the dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) fraction of ethanol extract resulted in the isolation of triterpenoid Lupeol 3-(4'hydroxy) dodecanoate, 27-ol, 28-undecanoate. The structural elucidations of the compounds were accomplished by spectral analysis including IR, NMR, 13C-NMR (DEPT-135), ESI-MS and literature survey.
