Normally grey cast iron drum brakes are used in tractor’s rear wheel brake drum. Alternative materials like aluminium metal matrix composite are used in automobile, marine ships and aerospace brake drums to improve the breaking effect and efficiency. The drum brake failure normally occurs due to high temperature generated inside the drum and also high stress. An attempt is made in this paper to investigate the scope of using aluminium alloy with combination of silica carbide as an alternative material with heat dissipation, strength, corrosive resistance, hardness and thermal expansion perspective. |
