Abstract

Electroless nickel plating base is used to form Silicon carbide composite coating. SiC particles of 2 to 5 microns reinforced into ENP plating. SIC particles are scattered all along equally in elctroless nickel plating. Composite coating formed have hardness upto 800 HV at 100 gm load. To improve micro hardness further need post heat treatment of coating. Processing parameters of post heat treatment such temperature & time of oven studied in this paper. These parameters are optimized to get desired results. SiC content in Al-SiC MMC was optimized 30 % and effect of Ni coating was studied using hardness measurements. This surface hardness modification due to electroless coating on SiC particles was confirmed with Microhardness Tester .Influence of time & temperature of oven during post heat treatment of SiC coating showed significant improvement in hardness values. As a result, the hardness values after post heat treatment exhibited better hardness values as compared to pre heat treatment. As expected, high SiC content in types of Al-SiC MMCs showed high hardness values as compared to low SiC content and base alloy. The present investigation suggests that post heat treatment improves hardness of ENP SIC coating.
