Heat exchangers are the important engineering equipment’s used for transferring heat from one fluid to another. Heat exchangers are widely used in various kinds of application such as power plants, nuclear reactors, and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, mechanical industries. Helical coil configuration is very effective for heat exchangers because they can accommodate a large heat transfer area in a small space, with high heat transfer coefficients compared to straight tube heat exchanger. The increased heat transfer coefficients are due to the curvature of the coil, which induces centrifugal forces to act on the moving fluid, resulting in the development of secondary flow. This paper focuses on the designing of shell and helical coil heat exchanger and its analysis is carried out considering the various parameters such as flow rate of cold water, flow rate of hot water, temperature, effectiveness and overall heat transfer coefficient in both parallel and counter flow. |
