Abstract

Coding applications have grown rapidly in the past several years with cost-effective performance demonstrated to increase the efficiency and reliability of communication. An overview of the many practical applications of source coding and channel coding theory in the past are presented. The following application areas are included: text compression, audio and video compression, satellite communication, data transmission, data storage, mobile communication, files transfer, and digital audio/video transmission. Although no attempt is made to be comprehensive in our coverage, the examples chosen clearly illustrate the richness, variety, and importance of compression and error-control coding methods in modern digital applications.
